What Your Baby is Doing This Week
This week will start some rapid growth for your baby. From this week until around week 20, your baby will increase from around 2-inches (5 cm) to about 8 inches (20 cm). The blood vessels in the placenta are increasing in both number and size to bring your baby all the nutrients she needs to continue growing at this rapid pace.
Baby's face is continuing to develop and the ears finish forming on the side of baby's head. Right now your baby is very head-heavy, and your baby's head will account for roughly half his body length.
It's still difficult to determine the sex of your baby through a visual examination however the next three weeks will make it easy to see if you need to plan a nursery for a boy or girl.
What Your Body is Doing This Week
To keep up with the increased demands for nourishment for your baby, make sure that you're gaining the recommended amount of weight by your practitioner. Most women need to gain 25 to 35 pounds (11.33 to 15.87 kg) over the course of the pregnancy. Depending on if you are underweight or overweight, your health care provider will have a recommendation for your own personal weight goals for your own individual needs to make sure you have the healthiest baby possible.
