What Your Body is Doing This Week

This is the week your health care provider will probably discuss whether or not you should get an amniocentesis. Amniocentesis is a test usually done between 15 and 18 weeks that can detect abnormalities in a fetus, such as Down syndrome. This test is done by inserting a very thin needle into the amniotic fluid surrounding the baby in the uterus and a sample of the fluid is taken and analyzed. Women over 35, with a history of health problems or genetic abnormalities should usually talk to their health care provider and weigh the risks versus what you can learn from amniocentesis.
