Pregnancy Week 2

What Your Baby is Doing This Week

Your baby isn't doing anything this week because you're not pregnant, well not yet anyway. But this is the week the magic will happen.

Although you won't know for months the sex of your baby, the sex of the baby is determined at the time of conception. There are 46 total chromosomes that are your baby's genetic profile, however only two - one from you and one from your partner - will determine if you're having a little boy or a little girl. Every egg from you is automatically an X (female) and every sperm will carry either an X (girl) or a Y(boy)chromosome. If a sperm carrying an X chromosome fertilizes your egg, congratulations you're having a little princess and if it's a Y chromosome, you're having a prince.

What Your Body is Doing This Week

Your body is in prep mode for the coming 9 months. The uterine lining, which will nourish the baby, is developing, and your body is secreting follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), which stimulates an egg to mature. At the end of this week, you will be at the midpoint of your menstrual cycle (if you have a regular 28-day cycle), and ovulation will occur (your ovary will release an egg into the Fallopian tube) so pregnancy is most likely to occur.

There is no "special baby" position to get pregnant and you're just as likely to conceive if you have sex standing up as if you have sex laying down. One good idea that appears to have merit is to stay in bed for at least 30 minutes after sex and relax. Sperm have to make a long trip through the vagina and into the Fallopian tube where your newly released egg is waiting and fertilization takes place. When that happens, you will be pregnant and you won't feel any different, but rapid changes will already be taking place in your body.
